Firm History

The vision for Ruttler Mills began in 2005 when Jim Ruttler was a still law student. At that time, it was a new concept that attorneys could start and succeed outside the big firm framework. Jim believed, however, that the high billing rates and high billable hour requirements needed to support the extraordinary overhead of many large firms was unsustainable. Technology, flexibility, and efficiency appeared to be the future. On these then-unusual beliefs and with a freshly minted law license, Jim Ruttler began in 2006 offering intellectual property legal services and rapidly grew his client base, now including both large and small clients.

In 2014, Daniel Mills, left his position of General Counsel and Vice President of a large wood products company to partner with and lead the trademark and business practice of Ruttler Mills PLLC, bringing real-world practical business perspective for our clients. Daniel brings 15 years of executive experience to his clients’ matters. That unique and valuable insight has helped our business clients large and small achieve their branding and business goals.

In 2016, the momentum for change has continued with Leif Stordal, PhD joining our team, bringing substantial experience in bio-related invention development and patent protection to our service offerings.

In 2017, Kyle Straughan joined the team with experience as an in-house business attorney as well as a member of an IP law group at another firm. Kyle brings a well-rounded set of skills and experience to fill a vital role for our clients.

Together, we continue to build a next generation intellectual property law firm that embodies the characteristics and qualities of the clients we represent.
